Steps to take after a hit-and-run accident

There’s no question that any car accident can be frustrating and stressful. However, if you are involved in an accident where the other party leaves or flees the scene, you’re the victim of a hit-and-run wreck.

Unfortunately, these cases can be extremely complex, and understanding what to do after they occur is important to secure your accident claim.

DON’T TRY TO CATCH THE OTHER PERSON INVOLVED

If the person who caused your accident leaves the scene, you may be tempted to chase after them. This is never a good idea. Also, if you leave the scene, you are also leaving behind any potential evidence that may benefit your case down the road.

YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE AUTHORITIES

Just like any other car accident in which you are involved, you should make sure you contact the police. They will gather information at the scene, a description of the vehicle and other drivers and talk to witnesses. The police will also work to find the person who left the scene.

HOW CAN YOU COVER YOUR ACCIDENT-RELATED COSTS?

Hopefully, the police will be able to track down the other driver. If this doesn’t happen, and you have underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage as part of your auto insurance, you can file a claim to receive compensation. In Texas, collision coverage will also pay for vehicle repairs. Keep in mind that you have to opt into UM/UMI and collision coverage, so if you don’t have it now, you may want to consider getting it.

PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS AFTER A HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT

If you are involved in a hit-and-run accident, make sure you use the tips above to protect yourself and your ability to recover compensation. While these cases can be complex, there are options.
